2014 DRAFT: FAB FIVE

The 2014 NHL draft is figuring itself out. With only a few more miles (playoffs, the Euro U18s) to go, it appears the top five is established. There is no Taylor v. Tyler 1-2 race, but there's a whole lotta Sams.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal describes the current position for the Edmonton Oilers. They're intrigued by Reinhart but like Ekblad and Draisaitl more. The numbers don't give us much help (Reinhart and Draisaitl are both on the verge of 100 point seasons, Ekblad is having a huge offensive season too) so it may come down to position preference.

The draft services can agree on the top five:

RED LINE REPORT

CRAIG BUTTON

BOB MCKENZIE

No

Name

Team

1

D Aaron Ekblad

Barrie (OHL)

2

C Sam Reinhart

Kootenay (WHL)

3

C Sam Bennett

Kingston (OHL)

4

L Michael Dal Colle

Oshawa (OHA)

5

C Leon Draisaitl

Prince Albert (WHL)

So, we're reaching a point in the season where (European tournament aside) there's a consensus at the top of the draft. It looks like 1-2 is likely to be Ekblad-Reinhart and then the teams will decide about the order of Bennett, Draisaitl and Dal Colle.

DON'T YOU DARE MOCK ME!!!!

If we marry the teams currently inside the top 5 (lottery to come), this might be the top of the draft board this summer.

1. Buffalo: D Aaron Ekblad

2. Edmonton: C Leon Draisaitl (Matty speaks)

3. Florida: C Sam Reinhart

4. Calgary: C Sam Bennett

5. NY Islanders: L Michael Dal Colle

Edmonton and Calgary fans will enjoy watching their two prospects develop together. It's going to be fun!
