David Legwand is the last best chance for NHL teams to sign a legit center for 2014-15 season. Darren Dreger from TSN mentioned earlier today that Toronto put in a bid for him (source) and that makes sense. The Leafs are an interesting team up the middle, but not that interesting.
LEGWAND'S VOLLMAN SLEDGEHAMMER
This isn't quite fair, most of Legwand's season was spent in Nashville and this is the Detroit blotter. Having said that, it's interesting to see where he played, no zone start push and he did in fact play tough opponents.
Here's the Nashville Sound with Legwand inserted (sorry about the color). Again, no zone start push and he played 2nd toughs, but Mike Fisher is on an island and everyone else is bunched together. Legwand isn't pushing any rivers.
This is all from Rob Vollman by the way. He's a brilliant guy, has been telling anyone who'll listen about the great free agent buys this season (he'll be on with me tomorrow, TSN 1260 at 11am to discuss).
So, he's an interesting player. He's still playing fairly tough competition, and his shot differential (Corsi ON) is just below par. He's probably a decent investment for a year or two, but it's his free agent summer and he'll want a lot of money.
Legwand is a good offensive player (still) and he didn't play 5x5 with the best players in Nashville or Detroit. Hmm. I think he's going to get too much money in free agency, but that said, once he's signed by your team 45 points and a shot differential in the range of even are a decent bet.
